چکیده

Recent progress of computer and network technologies makes it possible to store and retrieve a large volume of multimedia data in many applications. In such applications, indexing for retrieving multimedia data efficiently plays a important role. Depending on the media type, multimedia data shows distinct characteristics and requires different approach to handle. In this paper, we propose a fast melody finder (FMF) that can retrieve melodies fast from audio database using frequently queried tunes. Those tunes are collected from user queries and organized dynamically into an index. Considering general user request pattern for multimedia data, those tunes will cover significant portion of user requests. To handle audio data, FMF transcribes all the acoustic and common music notational inputs into a specific string such as UDR and LSR. We implemented a prototype system and report on its performance through various experiments.

Physical interaction and association by contiguity in memory for the words and melodies of songs.

Three experiments were designed to investigate two explanations for the integration effect in memory for songs (Serafine, Crowder, & Repp, 1984; Serafine, Davidson, Crowder, & Repp, 1986). The integration effect is the finding that recognition of the melody (or text) of a song is better in the presence of the text (or melody) with which it had been heard originally than in the presence of a dif...

Identification of speeded and slowed familiar melodies by younger, middle-aged, and older musicians and nonmusicians.

There is a range of tempos within which listeners can identify familiar tunes (around 0.8 to 6.0 notes/s). Faster and slower tunes are difficult to identify. The authors assessed fast and slow melody-identification thresholds for 80 listeners ages 17-79 years with expertise varying from musically untrained to professional. On fast-to-slow (FS) trials the tune started at a very fast tempo and sl...

Recognition memory for text and melody of songs after unilateral temporal lobe lesion: evidence for dual encoding.

The role of left and right temporal lobes in memory for songs (words sung to a tune) was investigated. Patients who had undergone focal cerebral excision for the relief of intractable epilepsy along with normal control subjects were tested in 2 recognition memory tasks. The goal of Experiment 1 was to examine recognition of words and of tunes when they were presented together in an unfamiliar s...

Calculating Similarity of Folk Song Variants with Melody-based Features

As folk songs live largely through oral transmission, there usually is no standard form of a song each performance of a folk song may be unique. Different interpretations of the same song are called song variants, all variants of a song belong to the same variant type. In the paper, we explore how various melody-based features relate to folk song variants. Specifically, we explore whether we ca...
